Rouge à Lèvres. (a.k.a. lipstick) Let me tell you a little story (I promise to keep it short). I was fourteen years old (or so), the possibility of make up started to be in the picture, and my maths teacher was a former Miss Texas.
That's right. My maths teacher was a former Miss Texas. (What are the odds right?)
So before you think I've gone completely off tangent, it was her who taught me (and a bunch of other girls in my class) the importance of knowing which colours suit you (and to never wear tight stripes if you want to look thin on camera- but that's a different story).
The lesson went something like this: colouring is divided into cool and warm. You either have blue undertones or yellow ones, and you must work with what suits you best. No matter what.*
The story for me had a momentary sad ending given my life ban on yellow (at least if worn too close to my face). But I am happy to say I have warmed up to my best suited colours since.**
The point of this little story? Many of you have asked me about which lipsticks I wear (below are my favourite), but in the end we all have to work with what suits us best.
(Oh, and I'm in a GIF craze this week with my illustrations. But you've probably noticed that already, flickering lips are hard to miss after all.)

You're lucky! I didn't have that class until fashion school, when we all held up pantone sheets next to our faces and the entire class would say yay or nay. Turns out I'm a "spring" and look best in warm, slightly orangey pinks.
ReplyDeleteI know right?! I had no idea at the time what pantone sheets were even! From cool I have an almost Snow White complexion (so black, white, blue, red, pink, purple).
DeleteAmazing post! We love it!
ReplyDeleteMuch love from the SABO SKIRT girls!

Oh, I love your gifs! They are just so much fun.
ReplyDeleteYour favourite lipsticks are all beautiful x
I remember (shudder) trying out all sorts of fashionable colours probably with pretty scary outcome... I have now found the classic reds that really suit me and am sticking to them. The worst colour on me (as far as clothes go) is camel. It just drains all colour off my face and I look dead in it... Have a lovely weekend xo
ReplyDeleteHaha I can't believe your Maths teacher was a former Miss Texas! At least she taught you some valuable lessons though! Love the hot pink YSL shade!
ReplyDeletePaola the GIF is really pretty! Reminds me a bit of Christmas lights! Twinkly lips?!
ReplyDeleteHow funny about your maths teacher, I think we all have a point when we are told what colors suit us. For me it was a make up artist at Bobbi Brown!
have a great weekend!
Oh ! you lucky about having o teacher as a former Miss Texas ! Love the illustration here !

ReplyDeleteI have been staring at these, transfixed for the past 5 minutes. I am on my way to Duty Free at LHR and you darlin are a bad bad influence! hahahaha xx
ReplyDeleteI'd love that illustration on my wall, it's stunning!
ReplyDeleteI'm Snow White too but only my face, my body is yellowish from all my years of tanning, at least I protected one part of myself.
I would have loved to take lipstick classes with Miss Texas! I think I worked out my purple and red shades favourites, but I'm still looking for the perfect neutral/beige...Love your GIF craze and I think I'll visit the store of the Tom Ford lipstick this w-e...
ReplyDeleteWhat a great little anecdote :) I LOVE this GIF and I wish I could have it as the focal-point art piece in my living room... complete with the flashing lips, of course ;) I'm still not sure if I skew more warm or cool... I think warm but every once in a while a cooler color will look really great on me... maybe a person can be both?
ReplyDeleteGood advice. I love the Tom Ford black orchid and Armani silk 103 lipsticks. In fact I usually wear lipstick shades very close to those two. xo
ReplyDeleteAda
I love that gif..like someone above, I would hang it up, if it kept blinking like that, haha!! I have no idea what lipsticks suit me, I think maybe a warmer completion. Was staring at the lips again, do love that! xx
ReplyDeleteOh you lucky girl to have such a great maths teacher! Thank you for a lovely swatch of all of your favourites. I adore the 103 one here very much. The gif is fantastic! Love love love it.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, should you ever feel like writing an essay about dogs in response to any of my posts (even those unrelated to dogs), please feel free. I'm the same.

lovely image there! I can understand that this all sounds amazing to a young girl especially when delivered by Miss Texas! Wow! My skin goes from super warm in summer to cool-er in winter due to the amount of sun exposure we get on the islands. So.... I find I can normally wear most colours happily except for brown-ish ones..... what would that make me - cool or warm?
ReplyDeleteI like that Warhole inspired gif!

Great gifs and the power of lipstick: it really lifts my spirit to wear a bright red or fushia!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. Amazing blog!
ReplyDeleteI like the effect on the photo. How did you do that? I feel like running out and buying some new liptick now. Thanks for posting and feel free to drop by me too, soon.
ReplyDeletePhotoshop! I added lipstick to one of my illustrations (different colours) and created a 'movie' with the different layers.

ReplyDeleteSaludos.
cool! great post :)
ReplyDeleteI love the Armani silk nº 103 and the Tom Ford Wild Ginger, but this last one it's maybe too much for me.. Xx
ReplyDeleteI've always found the color rules a little tricky, at least when it comes to my skin tone. I'm suppose to wear cool colors, but I look sooo pasty in cool reds. Maybe it's because my hair is naturally darker. I have lipsticks similar to No. 21 and No. 49, and they both look great. Maybe it's because they're so bright they change the rule. Who knows.
ReplyDeleteIm o zero when it comes to make up so any tip is good for me!!!
ReplyDeleteWow I really love the the fact that you learned these things off your Maths teacher! I looove lipsticks and stick to reds and deep pinks. My favourite red is Mac's Russian Red, Lickable and NARS' Funny Face.
ReplyDeleteI love your gif:) It is true, we have to wear the colors that look best on us. Sometimes, it is hard to pick out the right makeup, though.

Oh I love this post!! This looks soooo cool!!:D

I have to say that I don't really know what colours suit me or not. I can guess for example that bubble gum pink doesn't, neither dark colours but... I haven't really worked out the math of the thing.

Great post ! I am not fan of lipstick but the more I am blogging the more I want to try things that I have never done. The only thing I put on my lips up until a few time ago were cocoa butter and transparent or iced brown gloss. Then one day I went to Yves Rocher and bought a red lipstick just like that ! The result was kind of aggressive but I still like it, before knowing what suits me the best I guess I want to try some crazy things lol !
