(Black) Roses

(Black) Roses. So I’ve been a little bit absent, yes yes. You see, I’ve been suffering (from what started off at least) as a post-Olympics hangover. The Olympics get me every time, and never fail to take me back to my childhood… You know, when I dreamt of being an Olympiad (despite ballet being the only sport I pursued in all seriousness…).

I screamed at the tv (yes, I’m one of those), I got (waaay) over-excited and even became a great ‘judge’ at sports I do not (totally!) understand (gymnastics and diving being the usual suspects). Heck, I even shed a few tears (clearly Michael Phelps on the podium for the last time and Mexico beating Brazil to win football gold were justifiable moments).

But the Olympic-hangover was gradually cured by immersing myself, in well… Myself. Yups, I have felt slightly like a tortoise or a snail. Receding into my little private space and doing some thinking, quite a bit of (art) reading, some painting experiments, embarked in new sewing projects (and done some more thinking). There’s been loads of thinking involved (so much that there has even been something I now refer to as creative insomnia).

Creative insomnia- a state of mind (which usually occurs to non-morning people and creative types) in which ideas seem to flood as soon as ones head hits the pillow (scaring away the zzz’s and hindering ones ability to sleep)

But enough of my sleeping patterns (or lack there of), here are a few things which have had my heart racing this past week- and a lot of it seems to bee heading in the black ‘n white direction. Or at least when it comes to art.

Musical notes and eyes (as in the ones from the Surrealism movement), raglan and kimono sleeves (courtesy of Señor Balenciaga’s perfect cuts), black roses (a revival from my teenage ‘punk’ year), M.C. Escher (as in the Dutch graphic artist),(some serious re-crushing) on Tom Ford’s lipstick in Black Orchid (last winters makeup obsession), Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) (my favourite Mexican Holiday), buckwheat (vegan) pancakes (courtesy of goop.com)(but I like mine with home-made strawberry jam on the side), and some overdosing on Bumble and bumble’s Surf Spray (as I desperately try to cling on to the last bits of summer).

(Slightly) Splattered

(Slightly) Splattered. Silk painting has (totally) become one of the favourite parts of my design process over the last couple of months. But what it also has done is awaken an inkling for watercolour and ink (after years of indulging in soft pastels).

The building up of layers, colours, and ultimately the unexpected result. Despite starting with a particular ‘vision’, the original concept often evolves as I work through the layers. And it is such spontaneity which I love to be able to apply to my designs.

I’m currently having a (pretty big!) splattered sort of moment. I love the dimension (and more casual effect) it adds to the fabric, and I will try to photograph the dress this fabric turned into ASAP (so help me pray to the Hurricane Gods to take a few days off this week!).

(Before) Fashion Illustration

August 5, 2012 in Fashion Illustration, PvdH Art

(Before) Fashion Illustration. A frequent question I get asked is on how (the heck!) I got started in fashion illustration/design with a background in economics and finance. While it may seem as rather strange path to follow, art (in one way or another) has always been a part of my life.

Art has been a constant form of expression, and has subsequently changed (rather drastically) throughout. In fact, it is rather fun to open up old sketchbooks (and by old I mean even from just a year ago) and observe the changes. From the rendering, to the usage of colour (or lack there of), to the actual topics.

Looking back I suppose my greatest interest has been in portraiture throughout. Even in my fashion illustrations, I will start with the details in the face (as for me the expression is at the centre of it all).

So here I leave you with one of my favourites, titled ‘Freedom’ and dating to April of last year- just as the controversial burka ban came into place in France  (and I had the very personal opinion that all should have the freedom of dress, particularly if based on personal beliefs).

OK, now back to an Olympics Sunday (!!!).

PvdH, Burgundy & Tom Ford

September 27, 2011 in Beauty, Fashion Illustration, PvdH Art

PvdH, Burgundy & Tom Ford. There are two things which have got me pretty pumped up this fall: burgundy and Tom Ford. The latter one might be pretty self-explanatory if you also consider Tom Ford to be one of the Fashion Gods, have loved the fact that he is back to designing womenswear collections (even if we cannot see them until a few months after they have been presented to the fashion elite), and you are aware of his recent dive into make up (Mr. Ford is a customer of his own beauty line for crying out loud).

Now the first one might also be pretty obvious if you have seen anything fashion-related throughout September. Burgundy has taken over as the colour of choice, from clothes to make-up. My favourite choice to indulge in the trend? Tom Ford’s lip colour in Black Orchid. Sweet-smelling (I believe the last scent-infused lip anything I bought were Lipsmackers…) and a beautiful dark and rich shade, this lipstick has rapidly become my go-to shade. Toned-down with lip balm or vamped-up (quite literally) when applied directly, I cannot express enough with words how obsessed I am with this little black&gold tube. So since I cannot express enough with words, I took the liberty of (rather liberally) applying Tom Ford’s Black Orchid lip colour to an illustration of mine.

Nude

‘Desnudo’ (Nude) by PvdH, 2009. Pastels on watercolour paper

Exhausted. Completely and utterly exhausted is how I came home today. You know the days after running errands et al. (on crutches!) and all you want is to be in a far (very far) away land. You know, those Far Away Lands where they serve mojitos by the beach… Anyways, you get my drift. Here is an oldie of mine (as in a Vintage PvdH!), which never fails to take me to a better place.
