Mexico Instagrammed

May 4, 2012 in The PvdH View

Mexico Instagrammed. Going through my instagram feed this afternoon (while stuck in the eternal traffic of rush hour post torrential rain meets sleet), it really (really!) hit me how much my life has changed in just one month.

#ReallyReallyDeepReflextionTime

London to Mexico City. Boom. Swoosh. Swoon.

Heat means a little CH by Carolina Herrera jacket. Holly-Molly Bougainvillea (loads and loads of bougainvillea). La Catrina (The Elegant Lady). A PvdH fuchsia skirt. On my work table. A selection of pan dulce (sweet bread). Riding a bici-taxi. Jacarandas in full bloom. My favourite pair of Tod’s with Sass & Bide skinnies. Nopales (yes, we eat cacti!)*. Illesteva Frieda sunnies (need I explain how handy they’ve been?!)…. Oh and a rooster roaming outside a polleria (where they sell chicken meat) #Irony.

A 180° turn, that’s what it was. And I am truly grateful for what this opportunity has meant for my life and cannot wait to (really) show you more. (So thank you for bearing with me in this month of so-called ‘adaptation’).

*Which I used to highly dislike when I was younger… but I am feeling very patriotic as of late (and they are quite yummy with lemon and salt, I swear!).

Dulce Patria

Dulce Patria is not just a famous (and ultra yummy) Mexican restaurant, but also an affectionate saying which directly translates into ‘sweet nation’. Such saying (and the abundance of colour) are all too evident in the Mercado del Sabado of San Angel (a famous market in the south of Mexico City).

Now you might understand where I drew inspiration for one of my favourite illustrations which I did (and posted) back in 2011. Dear Colour.

The Denim Vest, Jacket (et al.)

April 17, 2012 in Fashion Illustration, The PvdH View

The Denim Vest, Jacket (et al.).  Last week I told you a bit about the unpacking business and the (not-so-slight) shock of encountering my adolescent room. Well this week the closet-shift has continued and I encountered no more and no less than six denim jackets and a vest dating back to my early teenage years. From rugged, to slim-fitting, to acid-washed… why any person would need such a wide array confounds me.
But then again (after reminiscing much), I recalled how I was totally doing the denim-on-demin look (like pretty much every day). #Cringe

Thus the reason why, perhaps, I had been so hesitant on engaging (on any level whatsoever) in the current denim fad.

That was, however, until I tried on the denim vest with a feminine fuchsia skirt#InstantLove

Need I say never say never?

Jacarandas (and a 1st Anniversary!)

April 12, 2012 in Beauty, The PvdH View

Jacarandas (and a 1st Anniversary!). Jacarandas are the cherry blossoms of Mexico, colouring the streets of Mexico City in beautiful lilac hues all throughout the Easter period.* Jacarandas are so distinct of this period that (along with 3-hour long masses, bullfights, Easter fairs… ) I simply cannot think of a Mexican Easter without them.

Talking lilac hues, I’ve been experimenting some in the lipstick department mixing shades here and there (something which for some reason I hadn’t attempted before). My current favourite combo is applying an all over layer of Tom Ford’s Violet Fatale and dabbing on the centre a touch of Black Orchid (also by Mr. Ford). The result is a more intense fuchsia with some added depth
Oh, and today is The PvdH Journal’s 1st Anniversary (!!!) It has been a pretty awesome year and the blog has taken me to places in my life which I wouldn’t have imagined, so I want to thank you all so much for reading, commenting, chatting, supporting, et al. So here is to the first year and what is yet to come (celebrating Mexican style with my favourite pan dulce**, a concha***).

*I got some footage yesterday (waiting to be edited!) to show you jacarandas in full-swing.
** sweet bread
*** a shell (a light dough covered in sugar, fashioned to resemble a shell!)

My Studio (Sneak Peek)

My Studio (Sneak Peek). I’ve packed, I’ve (semi) unpacked, and right about now the true existential meaning of a moving company comes to mind. O.K. so I didn’t have enough things (a.k.a. a whole house) to warrant for one, but still (!!!)
Moving sucks. But Mexico rocks. So it has more than evened out.
But now let me tell you a little something about this whole unpacking business. Arriving last week into my adolescent room (and adjacent art studio) has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience (can’t really happen more than once really…).
Stuffed animals,  I <3 DiCaprio scrapbooks (do not judge), N’Sync CDs (you may judge a little), Abercrombie in galore, the odd Lily Pulitzer here and there, Marc by Marc Jacobs minis (might squeeze myself into these!)…. You catch my drift.
It has truly been a memory-flooded week you can say, and don’t get me started on how amazing it has been to be back in Mexico City. (Hint Hint: food overdose!).
So here are a couple of snapshots of things finding their righteous place in my new studio (and the odd childhood memory that remains).
(p.s. I miss IKEA. I need IKEA. Yikes).
